Abstract
The popularity of Paraíba-type tourmalines is mainly due to their remarkable colour, often described as « neon » blue. Many tourmalines with this colour are traded under the label Paraíba, but sometimes mistakenly. Today, gemmological laboratories devote particular attention to the detection of copper, an element whose presence is necessary to identify the stone as a Paraíba type. This article presents the analysis of a remarkable tourmaline with a colour that is characteristic of Paraíba-type tourmalines, but not copper-bearing.
Résumé
La popularité des tourmalines de type Paraíba est principalement due à leur remarquable couleur souvent décrite comme bleu « néon ». De nombreuses tourmalines ayant cette couleur sont commercialisées sous l’appellation Paraíba mais parfois de façon erronée. Les laboratoires de gemmologie sont aujourd’hui particulièrement attentifs à la détection du cuivre, un élément dont la présence est nécessaire pour identifier la pierre comme type Paraíba. Cet article présente l’analyse d’une remarquable tourmaline présentant une couleur caractéristique des tourmalines type Paraíba mais non cuprifère.
